Trig Star Contest:

The Trig Star Contest is an annual high school mathematics competition sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors based on the practical application of Trigonometry. The program recognizes the best students from high schools throughout the nation.

The North Carolina Society of Surveyors sponsors this competition in North Carolina. An NCSS member will come to your school to administer the test. The test is composed of several trigonometry problems, and one trigonometry and surveying problem. The test answers are scored for accuracy. If more than one student has the same high score, the student who completed the test in the shortest time is the winner. The statewide winner has the opportunity to compete at the national level by taking an additional test.

Because of the generosity of the N.C. Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors, the North Carolina Society of Surveyors is able to give a $500 cash prize to the statewide winner and a $500 cash prize to that student's teacher. Several local chapters also sponsor prizes for the winners in their local areas.

National awards are provided by the National Society of Professional Surveyors Richard E. Lomax National Trig-Star Scholarships and Teaching Excellence Awards:

First Place Winner $1,000.00 Scholarship
Second Place Winner $500.00 Scholarship
Third Place Winner $250.00 Scholarship

useful formulas and sample questions from years 2002-2003 and 2004-2005 may also be downloaded.
